Chris Bielski (left) went trophy mushroom hunting and found what is likely the last giant mushroom of spring 2001. The mushroom measured 11 inches.

Ty Swenor of Indian River (right) found this eight-and-a-half inch tall morel mushroom over in the Boyne Falls area. Swenor is a surveyor and his work takes him all across northern Michigan.

LEFT:
Lori Ford of Wolverine found some early season mushrooms the weekend of April 21 and 22 west of I-75. Found approximately three pounds in the course of a few days. Ford says she's an avid mushroom hunter. "I can't wait to go every year."

 

 

RIGHT:
These four Indian River people found about three pounds of mushrooms last Friday afternoon. They are (from left) Rodger Wilson, Bonnie Fisher, Kirk Burill, Carol Burill. With temperatures warming up, if we get a little more rain the mushroom hunting should be excellent in the next few weeks.

Fisher finds a mammoth white morel .

Robert Pollard from Jackson was visiting Indian River on a fishing trip earlier this week. He didn't find much for fish, but he found this huge white morel mushroom. The mushroom measured 8.5 inches and weighed almost half a pound.

Looking more like a puff boulder ...

Lindsay LaChance found this huge puffball in the Wildwood Road area south of Indian River. The puffball weighed 18 lbs. 4 ounces, and measured 48-inches around. LaChance said she planned to make dinner out of the huge fungus.
